At COP16’s Sustainability Innovation Week, the Research, Development, and Innovation Authority (RDIA) recognized Professor Noreddine Ghaffour, leader of the DESAL Research Group at KAUST, for his remarkable contributions to advancing sustainable water solutions.

Professor Ghaffour’s pioneering work focuses on developing innovative, low-energy desalination technologies that address global water challenges while supporting sustainability goals. As a leader in the field, his research drives the development of scalable, energy-efficient water treatment processes, positioning KAUST as a global hub for innovation in water security.

Under his leadership, the DESAL Research Group has achieved significant advancements, including:

• Scaling up membrane distillation processes to improve efficiency and accessibility in water treatment.
• Implementing AI-driven systems for biofouling detection to enhance desalination plant performance.
• Conducting interdisciplinary research that integrates water, energy, and environmental sustainability.

This recognition underscores the impact of Professor Ghaffour’s work in tackling water scarcity, a critical issue amplified by climate change. His efforts directly align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, paving the way for a more sustainable future.

The RDIA also honored Professor Mark Tester, Chair of the Center of Excellence for Sustainable Food Security at KAUST, for his groundbreaking research in plant science. Professor Tester’s work focuses on enhancing food security by developing climate-resilient crops, highlighting KAUST’s comprehensive approach to addressing interconnected global challenges in water and food systems.

As Professor Ghaffour noted, “Innovation in desalination is not just about technology; it’s about providing sustainable solutions that balance resources, address environmental challenges, and ensure water security for future generations.”
