DESAL summer intern Imran Alturkistani wins national awards at Ibdaa Science and Engineering Fair

15 February, 2026

A summer research internship with the DESAL Research Group at KAUST has led to national recognition for Imran Alturkistani, who received a Grand Award (4th Place) and a Special Prize at the Ibdaa National Science and Engineering Fair finals, held in Riyadh from January 25 to 29.

The awards recognize Imran’s research project developed during his participation in the SRSI program, where he joined DESAL to explore innovative water treatment solutions. His work focused on the development of a novel membrane for interfacial solar steam generation, a promising approach for energy-efficient water purification.

During his internship, Imran gained hands-on experience in membrane fabrication and characterization, working with advanced laboratory equipment such as water contact angle measurement systems. The project built on his earlier interest in sustainable water and energy technologies and allowed him to engage directly with real research challenges.

Reflecting on the achievement, Khalid Alhamdan, Ph.D. candidate at DESAL who supervised Imran’s work, said: “Imran showed remarkable curiosity and discipline throughout the internship. He approached the project with the mindset of a young researcher, not just a student, and this recognition reflects the quality of work he was able to achieve in a short time.”

As part of the Grand Award pathway, the Ibdaa organizing committee will invite selected awardees to a follow-up workshop aimed at supporting further project development, including preparation for international competitions such as International Science and Engineering Fair.

Imran previously reflected on his experience at DESAL, noting that working with the group helped him understand what it means to tackle real-world problems through research, while preparing him for future academic pathways.

At DESAL, mentoring and training young researchers is a core part of the group’s mission. By providing early exposure to rigorous, applied research, DESAL aims to help shape the next generation of leaders in sustainable water and desalination technologies.
